Extra Virgin :: My favorite books about sex

There is an enormous amount of information out there about sex and some of it is very, very good. Last week at Darling, I told the women that the best information I ever obtained about sex I found on my own, from books. If you are interested in understanding sex and sexuality better or if you are struggling with sexual issues, I highly encourage you to find some good books and start reading.

My Favorites ::

A Celebration of Sex: A Guide to Enjoying God’s Gift of Sexual Intimacy by Dr. Douglas Roseau

This is hands-down my favorite book about sex. It strikes a perfect balance between theory and practice, helping you both understand godly sexuality and practice it happily and successfully. Another reason I like this book is that Dr. Rosenau spends time writing to both the female and the male perspective, so that both a man and a woman will find tips for troubleshooting problems or building better intimacy. The book has also been modified for newlyweds, which I highly recommend to anyone about to get married!

Real Sex: The Naked Truth about Chastity by Lauren F. Winner

I love this book because it deals with the issue of sexuality and singleness, and in so doing lays bare the Christian idea of chastity, which is to participate in sex the way God intended. Winner argues articulately on the issue of sexual immorality, deals with wrong thinking both in the secular and in the Christian culture, and gives some of the best tips for remaining chaste as a single person that I have ever found. Every Christian should read this book!

The Meaning of Marriage: Facing the Complexities of Commitment with the Wisdom of God by Timothy and Kathy Keller

Correct thinking about sex cannot be found without also thinking correctly about marriage. The Kellers book on marriage is clear, easy to read, and very, very good. Whether you’re single or married, this book will help you to get to a place of understanding about God’s plan for marriage and sex, and also has enormous power to inspire you to think God’s plan uniquely beautiful. This book is a treasure.

Runners-Up ::

The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love Tim and Beverly LaHaye

Very practical information, especially the chapters on feminine arousal, although it feels outdated and plodding at times.

Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage by Dr. Kevin Leman

The tone of this book is a little brusque for my taste, but Dr. Leman doesn’t shy away from a frank discussion on what sex is actually like and what you can do to prepare for it.

On My Reading List ::

Redeeming Sex: Naked Conversations About Sexuality and Spirituality by Debra Hirsch

Fully Alive: A Biblical Vision of Gender That Frees Men and Women to Live Beyond Stereotypes by Larry Crabb

Finally Free: Fighting For Purity with the Power of Grace by Heath Lambert

What about you? What are your favorite books on the topic of sex, sexuality or marriage? Any books you hated? That’s good to know, too!
